Round 3 – Swimming a round

For the first time ever our course was finished and ready by 5pm. Maybe we just didn’t want to be out in the rain that fell most of the afternoon, or maybe we hooked in with some bits of the course still out from last week but we had a good 4km of course ready by the time sign-on was opening. But it didn’t stop raining. In fact it got harder and we started to worry about a couple of awkward off-camber sections which were slick mud after just a few practicing riders had passed over them. Couple of quick minor diversions and we were ready for the races.

The under 10s and 12s had their fling in a minor downpour  – just like every round last year – and enjoyed their visit to the pond area.

That downpour didn’t really abate for the seniors race and it kept on getting darker under lowering skies, making the wooded section quite hard to see. Somehow the riders kept finding their way back out and did four five laps over some more new bumps and muddied grooves. Quite a few even said they enjoyed the course. Thanks for that and thanks for coming!

This week we were hosting a journalism student Edward Spratt who kindly sent us this short video showing sections of the course.

By the time we were taking the course down, those wet bits on the lower road circuit were completely flooded across. – Such a pity the water didn’t know about going uphill to get into those new flood alleviation pits. You probably don’t want to know how close we came to using those pits for your course. That would have been interesting…

Round 3 u10 & u12 report by Phil Au;-

There was steady rain on a miserable, wet and breezy evening but all the riders had smiles on their faces and relished the chance to ride their bikes and get muddy.  Another tough course with an off-camber section near the start before heading down to the pump track.  Then there was a really muddy and slippery section that went around the pond before climbing back to the top circuit.  Tom was sure there would be some falls but, amazingly, all the riders made it round in one piece with great bike handling.

Well done to to all who took part, especially Isabel Nyman (LVYCC) who won the U10s race and Samuel Leslie who won the U12s race.  A special mention should go to Sally May-Gillings (Team Flamingo) for racing in her first Beastway and doing so well in dreadful conditions.

U10 top 3 places

1.Isabel Nyman (LVYCC); 2. Ethan Leslie (LVYCC); 3. Lochlan Dyer (LVYCC)

U12 top 3 places

1.Samuel Leslie (LVYCC); 2. Joseph Prashner (High Beach Youth Cycling Club); 3. Owen Kreisky (LVYCC)
